The inclusion of Kozani in the European Mission “100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030” was the main topic of discussion between the mayor of Kozani, Lazaros Maloutas, and the students of the Department of Accounting and Finance of the University of Western Macedonia, on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.

The discussion took place at the University Campus in the village Koila, where the Mayor was welcomed by the Dean of the School of Economic Studies, Androniki Katarachia. The discussion had the form of an interview and took place in the context of the lectures of the course “Environmental Institutions and European Policy” with the scientific responsibility of the Assistant Professor, Polytimi Farmaki.

The conversation started with the students asking Mr. Maloutas to analyze the technologies that will contribute to climate neutrality and how this will contribute to the transformation of the region’s development model.

The mayor of Kozani talked about the European Green Deal for the transition to a climate-neutral Europe by 2050, as well as the EU policy on smart sustainable mobility, fuels and “clean” energy regions.

Referring to Kozani’s participation in the European Cities Mission, Mr. Maloutas underlined that the city will be a “pilot” city among other European cities that will be the pioneers of Europe.

Finally, the mayor referred to the first stage of the Cities Mission, the drafting of the Climate Contract of the Municipality of Kozani. The students then completed the questionnaire on the Climate Agreement, putting into practice the principle of “public participation” in environmental policy-making, as they had been taught.
