By formulating a detailed proposal, Kozani is claiming to join the European Commission Mission for “100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030”. Aiming to become the first city in Greece with zero greenhouse gas emissions and having adopted the Declaration on Climate Neutrality, the capital of Western Macedonia is planning to change its development model.

As the mayor of Kozani, Lazaros Maloutas, underlined in a press conference on the subject: “Our goal is to plan together with the citizens, for the citizens. We envision a better future, dealing with the effects of de-carbonization in the most dynamic way and recovering from the effects that the COVID-19 pandemic has already brought”.

In this light, the Municipality of Kozani is going to start Consultation Workshops with the participation of citizens and partners, with the goal of co-designing the Climate Action Plan. At the same time, the process of setting up an Active Citizens’ Committee for Climate Neutrality will begin, so that the voice of all citizens is reflected in the Action Plan.

Mr. Maloutas called on all citizens to participate in the process, stating: “We ask citizens, entrepreneurs, the academic and research community, scientific and professional entities, as well as organized civil society groups, to actively engage with the design, that is now starting. The transition to a climate-neutral and smart society is not only an urgent challenge but also a unique opportunity to build a better future for all. I invite you all to create our future together. ”
