The Regional Directorate of Education of Western Macedonia, the Municipality of Kozani and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering of the University of Western Macedonia organize the Pupil and Student Programming Competition on the theme “Kozani 2030: On the road to climate neutrality”, under the auspices of the Ministry of Digital Governance.

The competition is implemented for the fourth consecutive year, within the framework of the Kozani Municipality Strategy for the promotion of the Smart City model and the Municipality’s participation in the European Mission “100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030”.

The students of all school units of the Kozani Regional Unit and the students of the University of Western Macedonia are invited to program their ideas in an electronic application with inspiration, imagination and creativity regarding the transformation of the Municipality of Kozani into a smart Municipality. We expect that with their participation, they will contribute to the improvement of the standard of living of our local society and the fulfillment of the goal of the Cities Mission.

We invite pupils with the permission, consent and encouragement of their parents/guardians and also students to take part in the development of their own application in a programming environment. Indicative axes are:

1. Environment and Energy

2. Mobility – Transportation

3. Climate Neutrality

4. Circular Economy

5. Culture

6. Digital Transformation and Smart City

The submission of entries/deliverables can be made from 25/1/2023 until 30/4/2023. The programming application can be implemented indicatively with the use of Scratch, Python, Java, Unity, etc. Optionally, the implementation of the application is also encouraged on Physical Computing devices (Arduino, Raspberry, BBC Micro:bit, Sensors, Educational Robotics Kit). The utilization of EL/LAC technologies is encouraged.

Each group can consist of one to three students. Each student can submit only one entry.

The evaluation criteria are:

1. Compatibility with the theme of the contest (YES/NO – Incompatible entries will not be evaluated)

2. Originality of the idea (25%)

3. Study of the existing situation and clear definition of the problem and the needs (10%)

4. Adequacy of application implementation (20%)

5. Completeness and quality of application documentation (10%)

6. Implementation of the application on Physical Computing devices (15%)

7. Presentation (20%)

 

The evaluation committee consists of the following members:

● Antigoni Tsirou (Informatics Educator – Head of PEKTPE Kozani)

● Tolis Tsiroudis (Executive of the ICT Office of the Municipality of Kozani)

● Stamatia Bibi (Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Western Macedonia)

 

The best submissions will be presented at a conference that will take place after the end of the competition. In addition, the best ideas will be reflected in the Strategic Plan of the Municipality of Kozani to promote the Smart City model and fulfill the goal of the European Mission “100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030”.

 

Special commendation will be awarded to all participating students. Those who stand out will win gifts and prizes, such as (indicatively): drones, educational robots, mobile phones, tablets and bicycles.

A certificate of participation will be given to all group leaders/teachers.

 

Important highlights:

● The participation of students takes place only with the consent of their parents/guardians.

● Participants (Addressed to):

○ Pupils of all primary and secondary school units of the Regional Unit of Kozani.

○ Students (undergraduate and postgraduate) of the University of Western Macedonia.

● People per participation: 1-3.

● The categories are distinct/independent: Kindergarten – Primary School – Middle School – High School (EPAL & GEL) – University.

● Interim optional training support meetings will be held.

3. Presentation (video of up to 5 minutes and a pdf file with slides)
